The cause isn't medical
In Port Hedland we interviewed Wirraka Maya's doctors about the preventable chronic diseases they treat in Aboriginal communities. They were clear about the root cause: housing. Much of it is controlled by mining companies, private rent averages $1,400 a week, and public housing is close to non-existent. Overcrowding follows, then infection, then illness that should never have happened in one of the richest regions in the country.
We documented Wirraka Maya's programs, from clinical outreach to community wellbeing, and while we were on Country we refreshed the team's headshots and made a suite of marketing collateral.
It was part of eleven days and more than 4,000 kilometres across the Pilbara in May 2025, alongside our work with Pilbara Community Legal Service in Jigalong and with the Mission to Seafarers.
